The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held the public defense of Master’s student Doha Hassan Numan from the Department of Architectural Engineering for her thesis entitled:
“The Impact of Transformation in Historical Architecture” on Monday, 25/08/2025, at Mohammed Makkiyah Hall at 9:00 AM, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Shatha Abbas Hassan.

The main objective of this research was to develop a methodology to track transformations in the architectural space of Iraqi architecture over time, clarify the role of influencing factors in these transformations, and predict patterns and forms of change in Iraqi architectural space in the context of the information revolution and artificial intelligence.

Key findings of the research include:

  • Transformations in the architectural space of Iraqi architecture are not linear or evolutionary in a traditional sense; rather, they result from complex interactions of multiple factors. These include economic, political, cultural, technical, and natural influences, producing spaces characterized by temporal instability while preserving fundamental architectural principles.

  • This diversity and multiplicity reveal a continuously dynamic and renewed transformation without losing connection to shared formal and functional roots.

  • Technological development, particularly artificial intelligence, plays a significant role in transforming architectural forms and elements, promoting flexibility and adaptability in shape, function, scale, and details, while enabling immediate responses to rapid changes by controlling influencing factors as inputs in the design process to achieve adaptive design outputs.

  • The application of standard measurement tools, represented by analytical tables, demonstrated the accuracy of tracking indicators, providing a core mechanism for understanding and monitoring architectural transformations and their causes, particularly at the spatial level.

  • This approach contributes to expanding awareness for optimal intervention in architectural outputs, ensuring their continuity and flexibility in response to changing conditions.

The defense committee consisted of:

  1. Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Jawad Kazem – Chair

  2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Sajida Kazem Aliwi – Member

  3. Dr. Hisham Alaa Hussein – Member

  4. Prof. Dr. Shatha Abbas Hassan – Supervisor

Following the scientific discussion by the committee members, reviewing the defense, and evaluating the thesis, the student was awarded a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering.
