Civil Engineering

The Civil Engineering Department is the oldest engineering department in Iraq. It was formed in 1921 as a simple nucleus, the School of Engineering, which was established to train graduates of elementary school in irrigation work. Over several years, it developed into the first department in the College of Engineering when it opened in 1942, and admission to the department for high school graduates was initially a four-year program that awarded a diploma, which later became a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

The department aims to prepare competent engineers who are capable of creativity and keeping up with engineering and scientific developments. Over the years, it has witnessed significant development in terms of horizontal and vertical scientific capacity and capabilities, with a significant expansion in the number of graduates and sub-specialties.

In the field of graduate studies, the Civil Engineering Department was the first to award a master’s and doctoral degree in civil engineering in Iraq, where graduate studies were opened in 1960 to meet the country’s need for researchers and specialists in civil engineering branches through the granting of higher degrees. It is noteworthy that the first student to pursue a master’s degree in civil engineering was Assistant Professor retired Zuhair Mikhail Sako, who enrolled in 1963 and graduated in 1965 under the supervision of Professor Yervant Ozanian. The first PhD in civil engineering was awarded by the department in the field of fluid mechanics in 1978 to graduate engineer Fadel Ali under the supervision of Professor Jameel Issa Al-Malaki.

Throughout the history of the Department of Civil Engineering, a number of prominent civil engineering figures and pioneers in Iraq have taken turns leading it, starting with the esteemed Dr. Mahdi Hantoush since the department’s inception. Fourteen professors have subsequently taken on the department’s leadership, all of whom have contributed to supporting its progress and establishing its scientific foundations. Among them are pioneers of civil engineering such as Dr. Jameel Issa Al-Malaki, Dr. Faraj Tajerian, Dr. Khaled Shaker Mahmoud, Professor Hamed Mahmoud Hamdo, Dr. Zain Al-Abidin Raouf, Dr. Riyadh Al-Rawi, Dr. Youssef Al-Shukurji, Dr. Musa Jawad Al-Mousawi, Dr. Riyadh Al-Mahdi, and others who will be mentioned later.

Since its establishment, the Department of Civil Engineering has contributed to providing scientific engineering services to the Iraqi society. Its academic staff provide engineering and technical advice, in addition to designing various projects for the Iraqi state, such as bridges, residential buildings, hospitals, factories, road networks, sewage networks, pumping and lifting stations, water networks, filtration units and complexes, and other basic and service projects.

Mission
The Department of Civil Engineering aspires to be an active part of the Engineering College scientific system by preparing civil engineers of scientific and practical abilities that comply with the international sound criteria of accreditation and quality assurance. The department also aims to develop the scientific research aspect of the faculty members in order to supplement the knowledge and provide the capabilities required to complete engineering experiments by the highest standards of quality for the purpose of consolidating the academic program vocabulary concepts among the students.

Vision

The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Baghdad seeks to be an essential tributary in preparing professional specialized cadres in the field of civil engineering. The department also aims to have a significant quality performance equivalent to scientific departments in engineering colleges that are accredited by international accreditation bodies to meet the requirements of the university and job market.

Inputs for Civil Engineering Department Admission:

  1. The student must have graduated from high school, scientific branch, from Iraqi schools, or an equivalent certificate, enhanced with authentication from the General Directorate of Education in the province, in accordance with the admission rates for each department. The student must be a full-time student, and it is not allowed to combine morning studies with work. The student should not be accepted in another study program, as it is not permissible to combine between two studies.
  2. Top graduates from institutes in the first stage will be admitted.

1-An ability to observe, formulate, and solve civil engineering problems by applying engineering, science, and mathematics principles.

2-An ability to produce civil engineering designs that meet desired needs within safety, economy, and serviceability limitations by applying both analysis and design procedures.

3-An ability to perform proper measurements and tests based on different standards and specifications, then analyze the results and use engineering judgment to make decisions.

4-An ability to communicate effectively with different individuals.

5-An ability to understand ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering conditions and make smart judgments that take into consideration the effect on worldwide financial, ecological, and societal considerations.

6-An ability to realize the current civil engineering issues, recognize the necessity for continual professional knowledge growth, and use modern techniques, skills, and tools in engineering practice.

7-An ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, set up objectives, plan activities, meet deadlines, and manage risk and uncertainty.
