Surveying Engineering
The surveying Engineering (SE) department within the College of Engineering (COE) at the University of Baghdad (UOB) has been founded in 1975 and established an explicit and precise educational strategy to build professional, outstanding, and unique graduates in the SE profession.
Vision:
The SE Department strives for excellence, creativity, and leadership in Surveying (Geospatial/Geomatics) Engineering sector and its related scientific profession particularly in Iraq and the middle east region. This is due to the department scientific roll in leadership the profession in Iraq towards smart technologies with the increased international demands of spatial engineering professionals. This is aimed to be achieved in a manner that meets the renewable requirements of society associated with rapid scientific and technological developments in this important and rare expertise.
Mission:
Contribute towards society prosperity in Spatial Engineering sector through preparation of applied engineers, professional leaders and efficient scientific research cadres with a distinguished level of knowledge and technological innovation skills. Aiming towards achieving quality assurance (QA) and academic accreditation in accordance with the sober standards adopted globally in Geospatial sector. This is aimed to be achieved in parallel to the scientific curricula in SE while adhering to the ethics of the Engineering profession.
Objectives:
- Acquire integrated knowledge in the field of Geospatial Engineering by providing a comprehensive study that stresses scientific reasoning and problem solving across the spectrum of disciplines within Geomatics towards accrediting the education programs for BSc degrees in engineering in Iraq. This is acquired by preparing students who possess skills in utilizing geomatics knowledge in solving relevant problems in industry, the professions, and public services.
- To promote quality and innovative engineering skills by handling open and complex problems, especially by considering engineering solutions in geomatics, comprising of technical, and design aspects. It also aims to build a solid scientific base for graduate Engineers to qualify for the scientific research process through postgraduate studies (Masters and Ph.D.).
- Provide educational and scientific preparation for undergraduates to be skilled Engineers qualified to work and serve as decision-makers in the Engineering community inside and outside Iraq. Further, demonstrate compliance to ethical and professional standards, thus, consulting and assisting the development and advancement of engineering education in Iraq.
- Communicate with Iraqi constituencies regarding activities and accomplishments and work towards supporting academic and research staff in scientific collaboration and research partnership with peers from international universities and highly reputable institutions in advanced countries.
- Anticipate and prepare for the changing environment and the future needs of Iraqi constituencies by enriching students with opportunities for alternative education in the area of Geospatial Engineering through undergraduate research, internships, and study abroad and keep their scientific level updated with the cutting edge latest technologies.
Graduate Outcomes:
- Provide the ability to distinguish identify, define, formulate, and solve engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
- The ability to produce engineering designs that meet desired needs within certain constraints by applying both analysis and synthesis in the design process. This is achieved by enrolling theoretical and practical knowledge together in surveying procedures.
- The ability to create and carry out accurate and precise measurement and statistical tests with quality assurance, analyze and interpret results, and utilize engineering judgment to make
- The ability to skilfully communicate with people including peers (inside and outside Iraq), clients, and stockholders towards responsible decision-making in various managerial levels.
- The ability to perceive ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering cases and make brilliant judgments taking into account the consequences in worldwide financial, ecological, and societal considerations.
- The ability to perceive the continual necessity for professional knowledge growth and how to find, assess, assemble, and apply it properly.
- The ability to work adequately on teams and to set up objectives, plan activities, meet due dates and manage risk and uncertainty.
