Mechanical Engineering
The field of Mechanical Engineering is one of the most important engineering disciplines due to its diverse and significant applications in our everyday lives. Mechanical engineers, through their work in these applications, effectively contribute to the development of human life. Some examples of these applications include air-conditioning and refrigeration, power generation and transmission, terrestrial, marine, and air transportation, mechanical tools and equipment, boilers, heat exchangers, pipes and pump networks, nuclear reactors, medical engineering and its equipment, project services, environmental pollution engineering, vibration and noise engineering, automotive engineering, turbomachines, space and sea exploration, and more.
The bachelor’s degree awarded by the Mechanical Engineering Departments serves as an entry point for graduates into a career that demands the application of what they have learned throughout their years of study in various practical applications they will encounter. It is crucial to understand that the degree, while significant, does not inherently make one a successful mechanical engineer. Instead, it signifies the potential for success if the graduate effectively applies scientific engineering thinking, analysis methods, and the database of engineering knowledge acquired during their studies.
Here at the Mechanical Engineering Department within the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, we are dedicated to adhering to this philosophy and are actively striving to achieve the highest standards possible with the resources available to us. Our aim, through all of the above, is to graduate an engineering staff capable of engaging with society and state offices, while also serving the country in various capacities, particularly within the aforementioned applications.
The department offers engineering programs leading to the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering. The B.Sc. is in “General Mechanics”, whereas the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees cover four areas of research; Thermo-Fluids, Applied Mechanics, Manufacturing of Engineering Materials, and Industrial Engineering
Vision:
The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Baghdad envisions itself as a cornerstone in producing highly skilled mechanical engineers, on par with internationally accredited engineering colleges. This ensures meeting both university and community demands.
Mission:
Our mission is to be an integral part of the College of Engineering’s robust academic framework, equipping mechanical engineers with both theoretical and practical expertise. We also prioritize enhancing faculty members’ research proficiency to contribute to knowledge advancement and provide top-notch facilities for high-quality engineering experiments, reinforcing the academic program’s concepts for students.
Objectives:
Since its inception, the Department has aimed to achieve the following through its meticulously designed scientific and engineering curricula:
- Cultivate leading engineering professionals with outstanding scientific and practical proficiency, enabling them to offer comprehensive scientific services in various specialized fields of mechanical engineering such as air-conditioning and refrigeration, power generation and transmission, terrestrial, marine, and air transportation, mechanical tools and equipment, boilers, heat exchangers, pipes and pump networks, nuclear reactors, medical engineering, project services, environmental pollution engineering, vibration and noise engineering, automotive engineering, turbomachines, space and sea exploration, and more.
- Establish a strong scientific foundation for engineers to excel in research through advanced studies, including Master’s and PhD programs, in various branches of mechanical engineering such as Thermo-Fluids, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Materials Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering. Moreover, the Department aims to supply universities across Iraq with well-qualified teaching staff, as graduates from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Baghdad with higher degrees have significantly contributed to supporting academic institutions nationwide.
- Foster consultants and contribute to offering scientific and engineering consultations through diverse avenues, including research, hands-on training, and specialized courses. The Department also endeavors to enhance ties with the business sector, public institutions, and engineering consulting firms to provide practical training opportunities and leverage the expertise available in these sectors.
- The Mechanical Engineering Department has been at the forefront of providing executive services for official institution projects for several years. This includes conducting laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, and experimental analysis for various mechanical components and equipment. As a result, the Department plays an active role in Iraq’s scientific, professional, and industrial landscape.
We are delighted to announce a collaborative agreement with University Putra Malaysia for the shared supervision of Ph.D. students. This partnership marks a significant step towards fostering academic excellence and global knowledge exchange
Admission Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Department:
- Prospective students must hold a high school diploma with a focus on scientific subjects from an Iraqi school or an equivalent certificate, authenticated by the General Directorate of Education in the respective province. Admission criteria vary for each department.
- Full-time enrollment is mandatory, and students are not permitted to simultaneously engage in work.
- Enrolled students cannot pursue another study program concurrently.
Learning Objectives:
The Mechanical Engineering Department aims to foster outstanding scientific and professional engineering professionals proficient in providing comprehensive scientific services across various domains of mechanical engineering.
