On the morning of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad witnessed the public defense of the doctoral dissertation by Maytham Hassan Mahdi Al-Saffar, a PhD candidate in the Department of Architecture. The dissertation is entitled:
“Digitization and Empowerment in Multi-Family Housing Projects”
The defense took place in Dr. Mohamed Makiya Hall at the Department of Architecture, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Osama Abdul Muneem Al-Tamimi.
The dissertation aimed to explore the potential of digitization and digital empowerment in enhancing the environmental and energy performance of multi-family housing projects. It focused on employing parametric design strategies and smart systems as effective tools for achieving energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The study involved both theoretical and applied analysis using advanced software such as Rhino and Grasshopper to create adaptive design models that simulate environmental responses and improve building performance.
The findings demonstrated that relying on such tools significantly contributes to reducing energy consumption and achieving higher levels of environmental comfort. The researcher proposed a set of recommendations to promote the integration of digital technologies in the housing sector and urged decision-makers to adopt such a digital transition in future housing projects.
The examination committee consisted of:
-
Prof. Dr. Saad Fawzi Tu’mah – Chair
-
Asst. Prof. Dr. Sajida Kazem Alawi – Member
-
Asst. Prof. Dr. Ghada Mohammed Ismail – Member
-
Asst. Prof. Dr. Amjad Mahmoud Al-Badri – Member
-
Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider Ibrahim Mohammed – Member
-
Asst. Prof. Dr. Osama Abdul Muneem Al-Tamimi – Supervisor
Following the academic discussion and after reviewing the candidate’s defense and responses, the committee unanimously decided to award Maytham Hassan Mahdi Al-Saffar the PhD degree in Architecture.
