The Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, University of Baghdad, held on Wednesday 23-10-2024 M.Sc. thesis examination titled:
“Development of the Iraqi Construction Companies for Implementing the Sustainable Projects” By student Farah Awad Sultan
The examination committee consisted of:
- Dr. Hatem Khaleefah Breesam University of Baghdad/ College of Engineering (chairman).
- Dr. Meervat R.Altaie University of Baghdad/ College of Engineering (member)
- Prof. Dr. Maysoun A.Mansour Tikrit University/ College of Engineering (member).
- Prof. Dr. Ibrahim F.Muhsin University of Baghdad/ College of Engineering (supervisor).
The aim this thesis was the to develop a managerial system and global sustainability standards for sustainable buildings that are compatible with the Iraqi reality in order to develop construction companies to design sustainable buildings and create a computer program based on a managerial system that helps in developing contracting companies to design sustainable buildings that can lead to a green environment. This was done by preparing a questionnaire that contained multiple questions based on standards specific to sustainable buildings. Many engineers with different engineering specialties and scientific and practical experience contributed to answering the questionnaire. It is worth noting that the process of building the questionnaire was preceded by the open questionnaire stage, which consisted of meetings and extensive discussions with engineers in different sites and projects. The researcher requested information and data in the form of a question form and presented this to a group of experts belonging to one of the formations of the Ministry of Construction and Housing by preparing more detailed questions about the requirements of sustainable engineering.
The results showed that there are factors influencing the failure to adopt sustainable building procedures and requirements, namely the failure of construction companies to adopt sustainable designs in public companies and the company studied due to the lack of binding engineering legislation and directives from higher or responsible authorities on the necessity of following these procedures, in addition to the lack of Iraqi standards specialized in sustainable buildings. Despite the lack of understanding and comprehension of these requirements, there is an urgent desire among all engineers included in the questionnaire to follow the requirements of sustainable buildings. Based on the results of this study, some recommendations were proposed for future research, including the proposal to establish a sustainability department unit, implement an a managerial system to develop Iraqi contracting companies to apply sustainability and work with the responsible authorities to issue laws related to green building and sustainable development, as well as inviting Iraqi engineers to participate in a continuous education program to increase their awareness and knowledge of sustainable development and green building through universities, ministries and the Engineers Syndicate, and prepare technical and economic feasibility studies for currently available materials and the possibility of using them in sustainable construction.
After the scientific discussion by the esteemed members of the examination committee, listening to the researcher defense, and evaluating the thesis, the researcher was awarded a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering / Construction Projects Management.
