The Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, presented a project to adopt benchmark standards and benchmarking as a sustainable approach to improving academic, research, and institutional performance at the university. The presentation was delivered during a meeting of the University of Baghdad Council.
The presentation outlined an integrated vision for employing benchmarking to assess the university’s performance and systematically compare it with that of leading international universities, while benefiting from their experiences, performance indicators, and best practices. This approach would contribute to identifying gaps, strengths, and opportunities for improvement, as well as establishing measurable and monitorable goals and performance indicators.
Dr. Ghassan explained that the project is not limited to utilizing indicators from international university rankings. Rather, it aims to adopt benchmarking as a continuous tool for institutional development covering various aspects of university operations, particularly academic, research, and administrative areas.
The presentation also addressed the potential use of benchmarking to develop academic programs and curricula, align learning outcomes and graduate profiles with academic standards and labor market requirements, and enhance the research system by comparing research performance indicators, the quality and impact of research, citation rates, levels of international research collaboration, and publication in reputable scientific journals.
The project further highlighted the importance of establishing a system of benchmark performance indicators that would enable the university to monitor its progress periodically, identify areas requiring further development, and benefit from the successful experiences of leading international universities in improving performance and enhancing the efficiency of academic, research, and administrative practices.
This project comes within the framework of the University of Baghdad’s efforts to enhance the quality of education and scientific research and improve institutional performance, thereby supporting its capacity for continuous development and strengthening its academic and research presence at both the regional and international levels.
