The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad witnessed the public defence of master’s student Hawraa Mohammed Raheem from the Department of Water Resources Engineering for her thesis entitled:
Assessment of the Hydraulic Performance and Water Quality for Selected Water Distribution Networks: A Field and Simulation Study
The defence was held on Monday, 16/6/2025, in Dijla Hall at the Department of Water Resources Engineering.
The examination committee was composed of Prof. Dr. Thamer Ahmed Mohammed as Chair, and members Prof. Dr. Zainab Baha Mohammed, Asst. Prof. Dr. Alaa Hassan Neamah, under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Rashid Thahir.
The main objective of this study was to assess the hydraulic performance and water quality of the water distribution networks 821 and 835, while the specific objectives were:
- To evaluate the pressure levels in the selected water distribution networks for areas 821 and 835.
- To assess the quality of the water flowing through the selected distribution networks.
- To simulate proposed scenarios for improving the hydraulic performance of the studied networks using WaterCAD
The results of the study showed that the two networks performed well in terms of water quality, but exhibited weaknesses in hydraulic performance.
Based on the research conducted in this study, the following actions were recommended:
To study new scenarios once the necessary data is obtained, such as the impact of fire hydrants, changing pipe sizes, fully connecting the networks, and proposing improvements to both networks in the future.
Following the scientific discussion by the esteemed members of the examination committee, and after hearing the researcher’s defence and evaluating the thesis, the student was awarded a Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering with distinction.
