Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, the Department of Environmental Engineering organized on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, its first annual environmental festival under the slogan “Sustainable Environment: From Idea to Implementation.” The event was held as part of the college’s efforts to enhance environmental awareness and promote sustainability concepts by transforming scientific ideas into practical, implementable solutions, with broad participation from academics, students, and representatives of several governmental institutions.

The festival aimed to strengthen integration between academic outcomes and labor market requirements, as well as to develop students’ capabilities in innovation and in finding sustainable solutions to contemporary environmental challenges, thereby supporting sustainable development goals and serving the community.

The event was attended by the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ziyad Tariq Abdul Ali, and the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Wameedh Nizar, along with several official figures and representatives of government institutions. These included Dr. Youssef Mohammed Youssef, Director of the Environmental Department at the Federal Board of Supreme Audit, Dr. Sinan Jafar Mohammed, Director General of the Environmental Protection Department, Dr. Noor Mohammed Al-Obaidi, Assistant Director of Al-Shahid Al-Sadr Hospital, and Dr. Bsemed Jassim Mohammed, Assistant Director General of Al-Doura Municipality, in addition to faculty members and students.

The festival included two main axes. The first comprised scientific and applied activities showcasing environmental projects and innovations focused on providing sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, as well as enhancing the exchange of expertise and scientific partnerships among participating academics and students.

The activities also featured a theatrical awareness performance titled “When the Environment Falls Ill,” which artistically depicted environmental risks in a meaningful way. In addition, an exhibition of scientific outputs and student projects from the Department of Environmental Engineering was held, highlighting students’ creativity and their ability to propose innovative solutions to environmental issues.

The second axis included a series of scientific lectures addressing the concepts of sustainable environment and the most pressing environmental challenges. The festival concluded with interactive competitions titled “Our Environment Wins,” creating a scientific and cultural atmosphere that encouraged engagement among attendees.

This festival reflects the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad’s commitment to embedding a culture of sustainability and linking academic knowledge with practical and community applications, thereby strengthening its role in supporting environmental issues and serving society.
