Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, the Human Rights Unit at the College organized an awareness workshop on Monday, December 8, 2025, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior / Directorate of Family and Child Protection from Domestic Violence. The workshop was entitled “Engineering for Justice: Electronic Extremism and Its Risks to Youth from an Engineering Perspective.”

The lectures were delivered by Legal Officer Major Yusra Muzhir Aidan, Colonel Ziyad Habib Ubaid, and Lt. Colonel Dr. Jalal Shaher Atiyah. The workshop was moderated by Dr. Israa Abdul Ali Kazim, Director of the Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering.

The workshop addressed the mechanisms through which the digital space is exploited to spread extremist ideas among young people, emphasizing the importance of employing engineering technologies—particularly cybersecurity and data analysis—in monitoring deviant content, detecting methods of online recruitment, and developing technical tools to limit its risks. It also highlighted the need to raise students’ awareness of safe and responsible use of the digital environment.

The workshop concluded with recommendations to strengthen cooperation between academic and security institutions in digital awareness programs, support engineering projects concerned with developing electronic monitoring technologies, and enhance students’ awareness of ways to protect themselves from extremist content on digital platforms.
