As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen academic and research cooperation with leading global institutions, a delegation from the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad visited the People’s Republic of China from October 4 to 16, 2025, headed by Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul-Majid, Dean of the College, and accompanied by Prof. Dr. Firas Mohammed Tuaima, Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, with the attendance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhannad Najah Jawad, the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in China.
The visit aimed to enhance academic and research collaboration between the University of Baghdad and Wuhan University, and to activate the joint agreement for establishing an advanced research laboratory for energy and smart grids. The initiative seeks to promote knowledge exchange, technological innovation in renewable energy and power grid stability, and academic partnerships involving faculty and student exchanges, joint supervision, and training programs.
During the visit, the delegation held formal meetings with the School of Electrical Engineering at Wuhan University, led by Prof. Dr. Dong Huzhou, Dean of the School, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Gamjin Aizat Rashid, Head of International Admissions, to finalize the agreement for the joint smart grid and battery storage laboratory.
This laboratory is part of a research partnership project established in April 2025 between several Iraqi and Chinese universities, including the University of Baghdad and Wuhan University, aimed at addressing Iraq’s energy challenges by integrating solar energy technologies and smart grid systems. The project continues the outcomes of previous meetings between the institutions and contributes to advancing energy stability technologies, battery storage systems, and innovation in the energy sector through knowledge sharing.
The visit also included field tours of major energy companies to observe the latest technologies in electrical power generation and distribution, as well as a visit to Wuhan University’s modern laboratories and smart classrooms. The delegation met with Prof. Dr. Eju Wang, Dean of the School of International Education, to discuss future cooperation prospects, including faculty and student exchange programs, joint supervision, and collaborative training initiatives—all aimed at strengthening the global presence of the College of Engineering and the University of Baghdad.
