The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad achieved a distinguished scientific accomplishment as the master’s thesis of student Rusel Sabah Abdulwahab from the Department of Water Resources Engineering won first place in the National Competition for Water and Climate Challenges Solutions in Iraq (ITEX).
The competition was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister, supervised by the University of Baghdad, and organized in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Scientific, Academic, and Artificial Intelligence Affairs, along with the Government Communication Team at the Prime Minister’s Office.
The winning research, titled “Artificial Intelligence-Based Optimization of Deficit Irrigation Strategies under Climate Change Conditions,” was supervised by Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleh Mahdi from the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad / Department of Water Resources Engineering, and Dr. Khalid Shamal Musheb, Director General of the General Authority for Irrigation and Reclamation Projects at the Ministry of Water Resources.
The competition’s organization and judging committee included Prof. Dr. Dhia Jasim Kazem, Dean of the College of Artificial Intelligence Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleh Mahdi, faculty member in the Department of Water Resources Engineering—reflecting the spirit of scientific collaboration between the College of Engineering and the Ministry of Water Resources.
This achievement represents a fruitful collaboration between the College of Engineering and the General Authority for Irrigation and Reclamation Projects within the framework of a joint contract for the completion of the student’s thesis topic. It embodies the University of Baghdad’s commitment to supporting applied research that addresses real-world problems using innovative scientific approaches, contributing to tangible economic and developmental outcomes that benefit the country’s vital sectors.
