The Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad organized an awareness workshop on Sunday, September 28, 2025, entitled “The Risks of Human Trafficking in Times of Authoritarian Regimes”. The event was held within the framework of the national strategic plan to combat human trafficking and in line with the college’s commitment to promoting human rights awareness among students and academic staff.
The workshop was delivered by the Unit’s Director, Dr. Israa Abdul Ali Kazem, along with liaison member Dr. Mohammed Khalil Ahmed. It addressed key concepts related to the crime of human trafficking and highlighted how authoritarian regimes exacerbate this phenomenon by weakening the rule of law and exploiting vulnerable groups.
The session also discussed the factors contributing to the spread of human trafficking, along with its social and humanitarian consequences. Furthermore, it reviewed the international legal framework and relevant national legislation, particularly the Anti-Human Trafficking Law.
The workshop witnessed active participation from students, emphasizing the importance of raising societal awareness and activating the role of academic institutions in confronting such violations through education, advocacy, and cooperation with relevant authorities.
In conclusion, several important recommendations were highlighted, including strengthening judicial oversight, enhancing the efficiency of security institutions, promoting international cooperation, and engaging civil society organizations in efforts to combat human trafficking.
