Students of the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad achieved an outstanding qualification for the final stage of the National University Championship for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Applications (NURAI 2026), organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research with broad participation from Iraqi universities. The competitions were held on August 12, 2026.

The championship featured project competitions across six specialized tracks: Medical, Industrial, Agricultural, Environmental, Education and Teaching, and Community Service, under the supervision of specialized scientific judging committees.

The “securAI” team from the Department of Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering participated with its project entitled:

“Architecture for a Checkout-Free Smart Store Serving the Community”

The project presents a concept for a smart store based on artificial intelligence and computer engineering technologies, contributing to a more convenient and efficient shopping experience. The team consisted of third-year students Mustafa Ahmed Saleh, Maytham Ahmed Hashim, Ahmed Mohammed Lafta, and Abbas Atheel Mohammed, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Ziad Tariq Alawi. The project received a “Very Good” evaluation.

In addition, Hamza Kareem Hameed, a first-year student in the Department of Computer Engineering, qualified for the final stage as a member of a team from the College of Artificial Intelligence. The team presented an agricultural project that employs a multi-legged robot and artificial intelligence technologies to monitor plant health and detect leaf diseases using YOLOv8, in addition to measuring soil moisture and creating interactive three-dimensional maps of different areas of the field. The project received an “Excellent” evaluation from the Ministry’s judging committee.

This achievement reflects the outstanding scientific and innovative capabilities of the students of the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad and their ability to employ modern technologies in developing practical solutions that serve the community and keep pace with scientific and technological advancements.
