The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held an in-person workshop titled “Green Concrete Towards Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Infrastructure” as part of the scientific activities of the Department of Water Resources Engineering. The workshop was delivered by Dr Osama Ibrahim and Asst. Lecturer Hussein Fadel Hussein on Sunday, 22 June 2025, in Al-Furat Hall, with the attendance of a number of students and faculty members.

The workshop addressed the importance of adopting alternative and environmentally friendly materials in concrete production and their role in reducing the carbon footprint of infrastructure projects. It also reviewed the most prominent materials used in this field, analysed their mechanical and environmental properties, and discussed practical challenges, relevant international standards, and case studies of pioneering global projects using green concrete.

The workshop aimed to:

  1. Introduce participants to the concept of green concrete and its role in achieving environmental sustainability goals.
  2. Review alternative and sustainable materials used in modern concrete manufacturing.
  3. Analyse the structural and environmental performance of green concrete compared to conventional concrete.
  4. Highlight codes and international standards related to the use of low-impact materials.
  5. Discuss key practical challenges associated with applying green concrete in infrastructure projects.

The workshop recommended:

  1. Encouraging scientific research in developing green mixes suitable for the local environment and available resources.
  2. Adopting the use of pozzolanic materials and treated industrial wastes in government projects and major infrastructure.
  3. Updating engineering curricula to include concepts of sustainable construction and low-carbon concrete.
  4. Enhancing cooperation between universities and industrial institutions to test and implement sustainable concrete solutions in practice.
  5. Raising professional awareness among engineers and designers about the importance of green concrete and its role in achieving sustainable development goals.
