Dr. Osama Abdul-Munem Al-Tamimi, faculty member at the Department of Architecture – University of Baghdad, participated in the PhD dissertation defense of Kani Mohammed Mohammed Saleh, which took place on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the College of Engineering – University of Sulaimani. The dissertation was titled:

“The Impact of Cultural Change on the Architectural Characteristics of Residential Houses – The City of Sulaimani: A Case Study.”

The dissertation explored the relationship between cultural and social changes in the city of Sulaimani and the transformations in the architectural features of residential buildings. The researcher aimed to identify how architectural composition is influenced by shifting cultural contexts by analyzing architectural models representing different phases of the city’s urban and social evolution.

The study aimed to:

  • Analyze the impact of cultural transformations on spatial organization and architectural composition of residential houses.
  • Clarify the role of social customs and values in shaping local architectural identity.
  • Propose design approaches that align with cultural changes while preserving the uniqueness of the residential environment.

The defense was held in the presence of a specialized academic committee and featured an in-depth scholarly discussion regarding the dissertation’s themes, methodology, and findings.
