Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, Dean of the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Iyad Abdul Hamza, Head of the Environmental Engineering Department, a scientific workshop titled “The Impacts of Climate Change in Iraq” was held on Monday, April 14, 2025.
The event featured active participation from the Environmental Protection Squad—a distinguished student team comprising third- and fourth-year students—under the direct supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Haider Mohammed Abdul Hameed.
The workshop aimed to highlight the major environmental and climate challenges facing Iraq, while presenting scientifically grounded solutions based on accurate local data. These topics were explored across six key research themes presented by the participating students:
-
The first theme, presented by Ahmed Aboud (4th year), addressed the issue of surface ozone concentration and strategies to reduce its emissions.
-
In the second theme, Shukran Ahmed (3rd year) discussed carbon pollution and sustainable treatment technologies.
-
The third theme, led by Yousef Asaad (3rd year), focused on river water pollution resulting from hospital waste.
-
Safa Fariq (4th year) tackled the causes of dust storms and proposed mitigation strategies in the fourth theme.
-
In the fifth theme, Shahd Ahmed (4th year) addressed the issue of rising temperatures in Iraq and environmentally friendly adaptation methods.
-
The workshop concluded with the sixth theme, where Ahmed Kamal (3rd year) explored renewable energy and its environmental applications.
At the close of the session, the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, commended the students for their outstanding efforts and high-quality research. He also praised the initiative to form a student-led environmental protection team, describing it as a significant step toward raising environmental awareness and promoting active student involvement in addressing Iraq’s environmental and climate challenges.
