Under the patronage of the Chairman of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Professor Dr. Iyad Abdul Hamza Faisal, the Department of Environmental Engineering organized a workshop on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Shahlaa Ismail Ibrahim in the department’s discussion hall, with the attendance of faculty members, staff, and students. The workshop was titled:
“Plagiarism and Paraphrasing”
The workshop aimed to explain the meaning of plagiarism, which is the use of another person’s words, ideas, thoughts, expressions, or inventions without giving proper credit or acknowledgment, whether done intentionally or unintentionally. Plagiarism also refers to attributing ideas to oneself that are not one’s own, without any scientific basis or reference to reality, and presenting ideas as original thoughts. On the other hand, paraphrasing occurs when direct quotations are irrelevant to the academic paper. While it is essential to paraphrase words, failing to do so results in plagiarism.
The seminar concluded with a set of recommendations:
- Researchers should avoid all forms of plagiarism.
- Researchers can use methods to prevent plagiarism, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, and using quotation marks.
- In all cases, the original source from which the quotation was taken should be cited.
