Lecturer Maha Rahim Salem, a faculty member in the Water Resources Department, participated in the workshop titled “Science and Technology in Islamic Civilization,” organized by the Centre for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage at the University of Baghdad. She presented a research paper titled “Applied Sciences in the Muslim World,” highlighting the significance of translation and knowledge transfer, which flourished during the Abbasid era. Her paper discussed the advancements in medicine, astronomy, pharmacy, chemistry, mechanics (Ilm al-Hiyal), and physics, emphasizing the key role of Muslim scholars in enriching both Islamic and global civilizations with applied and natural sciences. She also underscored how European civilization relied on many of these contributions, aiding its progress and development.
Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Abed Assal and Lecturer Fatima Jamal Muhandis from the Department of Architecture participated with their research paper titled “Climate Adaptations in the Arab-Islamic City.” Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainab Kamil from the Centre for the Revival of Arab Scientific Heritage presented a paper titled “Technology and Key Instruments in Ibn al-Haytham’s Work.”
At the conclusion of the workshop, certificates of appreciation were distributed to the participants in recognition of their contributions.
