As part of its ongoing series of scientific and academic activities, and under the patronage of the Deanship of the College of Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific lecture on Sunday, October 25, 2026, entitled “Artificial Intelligence in Chemical Engineering: From Data Analysis to Decision Support.”
The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ammar Saleh Abbas, Prof. Dr. Sama Mohammed Abdullah, and Dr. Ali Dawood Salman. It aimed to highlight the latest applications of artificial intelligence and explore its role in advancing scientific research and improving the efficiency of engineering and industrial processes.
The lecture addressed the fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and artificial neural networks, explaining how these technologies can be employed to analyze experimental and operational data, develop predictive models, optimize operating conditions, and support engineering decision-making.
The speakers also presented practical applications in several fields, including chemical reaction engineering, separation processes, industrial water treatment, the petroleum industry, and the development of materials and catalysts. Furthermore, they provided illustrative examples of using intelligent models to predict performance and evaluate operational alternatives according to efficiency, cost, and safety criteria.
The lecture also highlighted key challenges associated with adopting artificial intelligence, particularly data quality, model reliability, and the importance of validating results. In addition, it explored promising future directions, including digital twins and hybrid modeling.
The lecture concluded by emphasizing the importance of integrating conventional engineering knowledge with artificial intelligence technologies, an approach that can contribute to advancing engineering education and scientific research while enhancing chemical engineers’ capabilities to make informed decisions based on sound scientific principles.
