As part of the scientific and awareness-raising activities organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Baghdad, and under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, and the supervision of the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Professor Dr. Rasha Habib Salman, the department, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit, organized a scientific workshop entitled “The Impact of Fine Particles on the Environment.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Tariq Mohammed Nayef on Sunday, May 24, 2026, in Mahmoud Omar Hall, with the attendance of a number of faculty members, researchers, and students.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness of the risks posed by particulate matter (PM) to human health and the environment, while emphasizing the importance of adopting scientific solutions and modern technologies to reduce air pollution and harmful emissions. Such efforts contribute to supporting environmental sustainability initiatives and promoting a healthier environment.
The workshop addressed the concept of particulate matter, its physical and chemical properties, its natural and industrial sources, and the mechanisms by which it disperses in the atmosphere. It also reviewed its health impacts, particularly those of ultrafine particles, highlighting their ability to penetrate the respiratory system and enter the bloodstream. Furthermore, the workshop presented key international reports on air pollution and stressed the importance of adhering to established environmental standards in order to achieve a healthy and sustainable environment.
At the conclusion of the workshop, the lecturer emphasized the importance of continuing scientific and awareness activities that promote environmental culture and strengthen social responsibility toward protecting the environment and public health, thereby supporting the achievement of sustainable development across various sectors.
