The Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Baghdad organized a field scientific visit for third-year students to Doura Refinery over two days, Wednesday and Thursday, May 6–7, 2026. The visit was conducted as part of the department’s academic program aimed at strengthening the practical aspect and linking theoretical concepts with real industrial applications in the refining and petroleum industries, under the supervision of a group of faculty members.
The visit included field tours of refining units, upgrading units, and central laboratories within the refinery. Students were introduced to the actual operational stages of crude oil refining processes, as well as the mechanisms used to control chemical and physical variables in production units, which helped deepen their understanding of engineering applications in an industrial environment.
Refinery officials provided detailed explanations of the occupational safety procedures implemented within the facility, in addition to presenting the latest technologies used in refining and production processes. They also praised the students’ strong academic level and their engagement in asking precise scientific questions and inquiries.
This visit comes as part of the department’s commitment to preparing students professionally and practically by giving them the opportunity to engage directly with industrial work environments and become familiar with engineering equipment included in their academic curriculum, such as distillation columns, heat exchangers, and control and operation systems. This enhances their readiness for future integration into the labor market.
