Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, and the supervision of the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Prof. Dr. Rasha Habib Salman, the Department of Chemical Engineering at the College of Engineering / University of Baghdad organized a workshop titled “Safe Thought… Safe Society: Combating Intellectual Extremism Leading to Terrorism.” The workshop was held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Dr. Mahmoud Omar Hall at the department.
The workshop was delivered by Dr. Ghusoon Abdul Mohammed and Prof. Dr. Ammar Saleh Abbas. It aimed to enhance students’ intellectual awareness, promote values of moderation and tolerance, and contribute to building a safe university environment and a cohesive society based on dialogue and intellectual openness.
The workshop covered several key topics, including the concept of intellectual extremism and the mechanisms behind its development. It emphasized the importance of developing students’ critical thinking skills to analyze ideas and distinguish misleading content, as well as strengthening effective communication and dialogue skills to limit the spread of extremist ideologies and empower students to protect themselves from harmful intellectual influences.
The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations, where the speakers stressed the importance of continuing to organize awareness activities that enhance students’ intellectual awareness, develop critical thinking and dialogue skills, and activate the role of psychological and educational counseling in guiding students. They also highlighted the need to encourage activities that promote tolerance and acceptance of others, alongside strengthening cooperation between academic departments and counseling units to spread awareness within the university community.
This workshop comes as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to promote awareness culture and build a conscious and intellectually resilient generation of university students.
