A joint scientific research paper has been published by Prof. Dr. Huda Abdul Sahib Al-Alwan and Eng. Amal Fadhil from the Department of Architectural Engineering entitled:
“Visual Storytelling and Place-Based Learning: A Generative Approach to Architectural Cultural Awareness.”
The study was published in the Journal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering, issued by the international publishing house Taylor & Francis, which is indexed in Scopus within the first quartile (Q1).
This research represents part of the doctoral dissertation of researcher Eng. Amal Fadhil, supervised by Prof. Dr. Huda Al-Alwan. The study examined the role of sketch-based visual storytelling in enhancing cultural awareness among architecture students by analyzing visual stories drawn by students before and after visiting heritage sites, in order to understand how they interact with place.
The findings demonstrated that integrating field experience with visual storytelling enhances students’ understanding of architectural characteristics and spatial organization of heritage sites, strengthens their emotional connection to place, and encourages engagement with the historical environment and appreciation of its cultural values. The study also confirmed that creative activities such as drawing can transform heritage sites into dynamic learning environments that promote cultural awareness in architectural education.
