Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr. Ghassan Hamid Abdul Majeed, and under the supervision of Professor Dr. Iyad Abdul Hamza, Head of the Environmental Engineering Department, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad, in cooperation with the Environmental Engineering Department and the Continuing Education Unit, organized an awareness workshop on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, entitled “Drugs, Their Social and Economic Impacts, and Ways to Address Them.”

The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Tayba Hussein Muz’al from the Psychological Counseling Unit, in the presence of the Head of the Department, several faculty members, and students of the College.

The workshop aimed to raise university students’ awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and its negative consequences, while promoting a culture of prevention and social responsibility to help protect young people from falling into addiction.

The session included an introduction to drugs from both scientific and legal perspectives, a review of their various types, and an explanation of their health, economic, and social impacts on individuals, families, and society. It also highlighted the serious consequences drugs pose to social stability and sustainable development.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the lecturer emphasized the importance of integrated efforts among security, legal, educational, and health institutions, alongside community organizations, to combat the threat of drugs and limit their spread. She stressed the need for ongoing awareness programs, the promotion of ethical and moral values, and the strengthening of family and community cohesion.

This workshop forms part of the College’s continuous efforts to enhance social awareness among students, reinforce positive values, and contribute to reducing negative phenomena affecting youth through educational and awareness programs that help build a safe and supportive university environment.
