The Human Rights Unit at the College of Engineering – University of Baghdad organized an online workshop on Monday, September 15, 2025, titled “Engineering and Digital Citizenship: Towards an Aware Democratic Society.” The session was delivered via Zoom by the Head of the Unit, Dr. Israa Abdul Ali Kazem, with the attendance of the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Ziyad Tariq, along with a distinguished group of academics and specialists.

The workshop aimed to highlight the relationship between engineering disciplines and digital citizenship, as well as the role of engineers in creating a technological environment that supports human rights and community participation. It also discussed modern concepts of democracy and the impact of technology on political participation and freedom of expression in cyberspace.

Following extensive scientific discussions on digital challenges in Iraq, with contributions from academics and international law specialists, the workshop recommended integrating the concepts of digital citizenship and human rights into engineering curricula to raise students’ awareness of responsible technology. It also encouraged the development of technological projects that promote digital justice and community participation. Additional recommendations included holding such workshops periodically, enhancing cooperation between the college and human rights and academic institutions, and providing continuous training programs on international human rights law and cybersecurity.
