Mechanical Engineering

About the Department

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most important engineering disciplines due to its wide range of vital applications in energy, transportation, refrigeration and air conditioning, industrial equipment, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and more. The bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering provides graduates with the foundation for professional and academic careers, enabling them to apply their knowledge to serve societal and industrial needs. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Baghdad is dedicated to producing qualified engineers who can actively contribute to national development through engagement with the community and industry.

History and Development

Established in 1950, the department is the oldest of its kind in Iraq and has continuously evolved to meet the demands of engineering education. Initially offering a four-year bachelor’s program, it later expanded to include specializations in power, design, manufacturing, and textiles. In the 1990s, an aeronautical engineering program was added, which became an independent department in 2017.

The department has played a pioneering role in postgraduate studies, launching master’s programs in 1971 and doctoral programs in 1982. These have since expanded to advanced fields such as renewable energy, mechatronics, materials, and computational mechanics. In 2024–2025, a master’s in robotics was introduced and the PhD in manufacturing and industrial engineering was reopened.

Today, the department continues to modernize its curricula, integrate advanced technologies, and align its learning outcomes with international standards. It is actively seeking program accreditation from the Iraqi Council for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ICAEE), reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.

Vision
Leadership in providing engineering education in mechanical engineering disciplines according to international standards, in order to prepare qualified graduates who contribute to knowledge development, community building, and the promotion of innovation and excellence locally and internationally.

Mission
The Mechanical Engineering Program seeks to provide high-quality education and applied research, and to prepare competent engineers with technical skills, innovation, and teamwork spirit, who contribute to serving society in line with the highest academic and professional standards.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
Since its establishment, the Department of (ME) at the College of Engineering / University of Baghdad, worked hardly and continuously based on his noble mission in society service to achieve a number of strategically goals and objectives, the most important of them are:

  1. Prepare competent mechanical engineers with advanced knowledge, technical skills, and strong professional ethics, capable of competing locally and regionally.
  2. Foster a creative and high-quality learning environment that enhances academic and practical outcomes.
  3. Promote applied research in mechanical engineering to address societal and industrial challenges ethically.
  4. Strengthen partnerships with industry and research institutions to support training, employment, and knowledge-based solutions.
  5. Develop students’ leadership and teamwork skills through practical, project-based learning.
  6. Ensure continuous quality improvement aligned with academic accreditation standards.
  7. Contribute to sustainable development through innovative engineering solutions and community engagement.
  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering in mechanical systems engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply the engineering design process to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration for public health and safety, and global, cultural, social, environmental, economic, and other factors as appropriate to the discipline.
  3. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  4. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  5. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  6. An ability to recognize the ongoing need to acquire new knowledge, choose appropriate learning strategies, and apply this knowledge
  7. An ability to function effectively as a member or leader of a team that establishes goals, plans tasks, meets deadlines, and creates a collaborative and inclusive environment.

We are delighted to announce a collaborative agreement with University Putra Malaysia for the shared supervision of Ph.D. students. This partnership marks a significant step towards fostering academic excellence and global knowledge exchange

Admission Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Department:

  • Prospective students must hold a high school diploma with a focus on scientific subjects from an Iraqi school or an equivalent certificate, authenticated by the General Directorate of Education in the respective province. Admission criteria vary for each department.
  • Full-time enrollment is mandatory, and students are not permitted to simultaneously engage in work.
  • Enrolled students cannot pursue another study program concurrently.

Learning Objectives:

The Mechanical Engineering Department aims to foster outstanding scientific and professional engineering professionals proficient in providing comprehensive scientific services across various domains of mechanical engineering. This includes areas such as air-conditioning and refrigeration, power generation and transmission, transportation (terrestrial, marine, air), mechanical tools and equipment, boilers, heat exchangers, pipes and pump networks, nuclear reactors, medical engineering, project services, environmental pollution engineering, vibration and noise engineering, automotive engineering, turbomachines, space and sea exploration, and more.

Additionally, the department endeavors to:

  • Establish a robust scientific foundation for engineers, enabling them to engage in advanced scientific research through postgraduate studies, encompassing master’s and doctoral degrees in various branches of mechanical engineering.
  • Supply teaching staff for esteemed universities in Iraq, as graduates with advanced degrees from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Baghdad have significantly contributed to the scientific advancement of various Iraqi universities.
  • Prepare consultants and contribute to providing scientific and engineering consultations through various avenues, including collaboration mechanisms within the College of Engineering, and direct consulting engagements with government ministries, as well as numerous engineering projects in Iraq and its various institutions. This includes involvement in design, supervision, and management activities
