The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad, Department of Architecture, held the public discussion of the Master’s thesis submitted by researcher Ahmed Salam Saleh, entitled:
“Sustainable Affordable Green Housing Strategies: An Applied Study of Horizontal Residential Complexes in the City of Ramadi.”
The discussion was held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, under the supervision of Lect. Dr. Ahmed Nateq Al-Shammaa.
Thesis Objectives
The thesis aimed to develop an integrated evaluation framework for sustainable affordable green housing strategies that links sustainability dimensions with thermal comfort indicators in order to improve housing quality.
The study also examined the impact of the planning and design characteristics of horizontal residential complexes on their environmental performance. Environmental simulation programs were employed to analyze climatic and thermal performance, with the aim of achieving residential environments that are more comfortable, sustainable, and compatible with local climatic conditions.
Key Recommendations
The thesis presented a number of recommendations, most notably:
- Adopting sustainable affordable green housing strategies in the planning and design of horizontal residential complexes.
- Employing environmental simulation programs from the early stages of the design process.
- Adopting climate-responsive orientation and regulating residential density and spacing between building blocks.
- Enhancing landscaping and shading while improving wind movement and the Sky View Factor (SVF).
- Providing sustainable and thermally comfortable residential environments that are suited to the hot-arid climate of Ramadi.

Following the scientific discussion, the researcher’s defense, and the evaluation of the thesis by the members of the discussion committee, researcher Ahmed Salam Saleh was awarded a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering.
