The Petroleum Engineering Department at the University of Baghdad has achieved a new academic accomplishment to add to its record of international success, with Team Alpha winning third place in the MENA Student Design Competition 2025. The competition was held as part of the events of the 4th Symposium on Current Challenges and Recent Advancements of Flow Assurance at Texas A&M University at Qatar in Doha, Qatar, on November 20, 2025.

The team consisted of students Ali Abdul-Falih, Hussein Mohammed Shawkat, and Sajad Sattar Hussein, under the supervision of faculty member Dr. Osama Al-Umaydi. Their participation came amid strong competition that brought together top regional and Arab universities, including: King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia), the National Higher School of Energies (Algeria), Qatar University, Khalifa University (UAE), Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (Morocco), the National University of Oman, in addition to other leading teams in the fields of engineering and energy.

This year’s competition focused on the theme of energy transition in the era of artificial intelligence, where the University of Baghdad team presented an innovative project that reflected the creativity of Iraqi students and their ability to offer advanced technical solutions that contribute to developing the energy sector through the use of artificial intelligence.

This achievement reaffirms the distinguished standing of the Petroleum Engineering Department and reflects the efforts of its faculty and students in honorably representing the University of Baghdad and Iraq in international forums.
