The University of Baghdad, College of Engineering – Department of Petroleum Engineering, organized a workshop for postgraduate students titled “Citation in Scientific Research”. The workshop was delivered by Dr. Amal Habib Asi Al-Lami on Sunday, December 1, 2024, in the discussion hall of the Department of Petroleum Engineering.
Citation is considered a cornerstone of scientific research, as methods of thinking and addressing topics vary from one individual to another. Dr. Amal explained that some researchers rely on foundational scholars in various fields, whether in the humanities or applied sciences, while others draw inspiration from different sources to ensure scientific continuity and develop new ideas.
Dr. Amal emphasized the importance of critical and analytical reading of the diverse sources and references encountered by researchers. This requires an understanding of what researchers need to document in their studies. This step, which includes collecting and reading materials, is one of the initial stages of the research process. She added that researchers should pay significant attention to all information, take adequate time to comprehend it, and reflect on the points relevant to their research topics. They should then select and record pertinent words or phrases and discuss them.
The workshop enriched scientific discussions among attendees and opened new horizons on correct citation methods in academic research.
