The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held a public defense for the master’s thesis of Basma Mohammed Yaseen from the Department of Architecture, titled The Human Creative Space in the Sustainable Urban Context, on the 11th of September, 2024, in the Mohamed Makiya Hall, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ghada Mousa Razouqi.
The thesis aimed to clarify the form of creativity that imbues urban space with the quality of being creative, define the characteristics of a creative urban space, and explain the impact of the urban context and sustainability on these characteristics. It also examined the concept of collective creativity through creative urban initiatives supported by three creative structures. The practical application was conducted on two urban sites in Baghdad: Abu Nuwas as a green urban space with a riverfront, and Al-Umma Square as a central urban space.
The thesis concluded with several recommendations, including:
Supporting the economy stemming from creative urban initiatives and encouraging media promotion of these ideas.
Urging authorities to support places, structures, individuals, and community organizations.
Promoting such spaces as they enhance social interaction and communication among community members.
After the discussion and evaluation, Basma Mohammed Yaseen was granted a master’s degree in Architecture.
