The Department of Chemical Engineering organized a scientific workshop entitled “Characterization of Nanomaterials” as part of its ongoing efforts to promote scientific research and keep pace with the latest technological developments. The workshop was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Ibtihal Kareem Shakir and Lecturer Dr. Huda Majid Hassan.

The workshop aimed to introduce the latest analytical techniques used to investigate the structural, chemical, and physical properties of nanomaterials and explore their applications across various engineering disciplines. It highlighted the fundamental differences between nanomaterials and conventional materials, explaining how the nanoscale dimensions of nanoparticles and their high surface-area-to-volume ratio give rise to distinctive properties, making advanced characterization techniques essential for obtaining accurate and reliable results.

The workshop covered a range of modern characterization techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). It also addressed several spectroscopic techniques, such as Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Raman Spectroscopy, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS).

Furthermore, the workshop emphasized the importance of integrating these techniques to obtain comprehensive information about nanoparticle size and morphology, crystal structure, and surface and chemical properties. Such an integrated approach contributes to the development of advanced engineering materials and enhances their performance in industrial and technological applications.

This workshop reflects the College of Engineering’s commitment to advancing research capabilities, strengthening scientific and laboratory skills, and promoting awareness of advanced characterization methods and nanotechnology as effective tools for addressing engineering challenges, developing innovative solutions, and supporting scientific research and sustainable development.
