Under the patronage of the esteemed Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ghassan Hamid Majid, and under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Architecture, Prof. Dr. Saad Fawzi Tu’mah, the Department of Architecture organized the first panel discussion on the Tamayouz Excellence Award in Iraqi universities. The event took place on Tuesday, June 6, 2025, at the Dr. Mohamed Makiya Hall, and featured two distinguished architects who are among the founding members of the international Tamayouz Award:
Dr. Turath Jameel, the award coordinator in France
Architect Osaid Mohammad Majid Al-Aytan from Jordan, the regional coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa
Prof. Dr. Saad Fawzi Tu’mah warmly welcomed the guests, in the presence of several faculty members and students from the fourth and fifth years.
The session included a detailed lecture on the Tamayouz Award, its categories, participation requirements, and the objective criteria adopted by the jury panels. The speakers also presented examples from past cycles of the award, highlighting the achievements of students who received the top three awards. Special emphasis was placed on the distinguished participation of Iraqi and Arab students alongside participants from 105 countries, submitting nearly 9,000 graduation projects since the award’s inception in 2012.
The speakers noted that the challenges students face in their graduation projects are central to the evaluation criteria—particularly in terms of innovative design solutions and the added contextual value of the project. The discussion also touched on the significance of the award’s annual ceremony as a key international event that brings together the global architectural community.
The discussion was moderated by Prof. Dr. Saad Fawzi Tu’mah and Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulhussein Al-Askari, and concluded with a Q&A session, during which the guests addressed several inquiries from students regarding participation procedures and evaluation standards.
The Head of the Department extended his heartfelt appreciation to the guests for their visit and for their efforts in encouraging students to engage with this prestigious global award. He also expressed gratitude to the event coordinators, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sajida Kadhim Al-Kindi and Lecturer Ali Basim, the undergraduate studies coordinator in the Department of Architecture.
