On Thursday, January 30, 2025, the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held the public defense for Master’s student Shahd Safaa Faisal from the Department of Energy Engineering. She presented her thesis titled “Simulation of a 100 MW Solar Photovoltaic Power Station Optimized by Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Algorithm.”

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Imad Talib Hashem.

Objective: The research aims to design a complete model for a photovoltaic system consisting of solar panels, a boost converter, and an inverter to maximize power and implement the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The performance of the system is then evaluated across a range of temperature and solar radiation conditions, analyzing four different climate scenarios based on the solar radiation and temperature applicable to Iraq’s climate.

Following the extensive study, the researcher presented a set of recommendations, including the creation of a small-scale power station, calculating the actual power output, and working on an economic line to estimate the installation costs of a large-scale power station.

After the public discussion and the committee’s review of the research and the student’s defense, the candidate was awarded a Master’s degree in Energy Engineering with Honors.
