The College of Engineering at University of Baghdad held a public debate of the MSc student (Um Al-Baneen Hamid Qasim) in the Department of Petroleum Engineering about her thesis titled (Analysis of the Well Performance in the Fayhaa Oil Field – Al-Yamamah Formation) on Thursday (7th of March, 2024) in the Graduate Studies Hall of the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

The examining committee consisted of the following:
1- Asst. Prof. Dr. Hasan Abdul Hadi Abdul Hussein (Chairman)
2- Asst. Prof. Dr. Osama Sahib Saleh (Member)
3- Dr. Abdul Hussein Hadi Jassim (Member)
4- Lect. Dr. Dhifaf Jaafar Sadiq (Member and Supervisor)
The thesis is summarized as follows:

Analysis of the Well Performance is a key procedure in petroleum engineering, which aims at evaluating the behavior of the wells economically and the extent to which it is affected by production rates, as appropriate evaluation leads to increasing production rates, and thus lowering the wells’ operational cost.

This can be fulfilled by the optimal selection of various variables such as well-head pressure, size of production pipes, water cutting, reservoir pressure and its decline with production. In this study, all these variables were examined by analyzing the performance of four naturally-flowing wells in the Yamamah reservoir within the Al-Fayhaa oil field.

Furthermore, the use of Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) has been discussed as a feasible artificial lift method to increase well productivity. The results of this study sheds the light on the paramount importance of well-head pressure as the primary determinant of well performance, as it was observed that modifying the value of this variable according to a specific strategy, either higher or lower than its original value, leads to a noticeable improvement in well performance .In addition, the results showed that the original pipe size (3.5 inch outside diameter and 2.992 inch inside diameter) was the most suitable for all wells. Similarly, it was found that a decrease in reservoir pressure and an increase in the water cutter to 50% or more lead to a decrease in the well performance.

The results also revealed that applying ESP technology had the ability to increase output via helping to raise fluids to the surface. Therefore, choosing the optimal submersible pump to be installed in the well is significant to increase production and reduce costs. After the scientific debate by the members of the examining committee, the researcher has got a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering.
