The College of Engineering, University of Baghdad, witnessed the public discussion of the master’s student (Ghazwan Salah Mukhlif) from the Department of Civil Engineering about his thesis entitled (Modifying the Bearing Capacity and Settlement Characteristics for Shallow Footing Using Structural Skirt) on 9/16/2024 in Al-Biruni Hall under the supervision of Prof. Dr. A’amal A.H.Al-Saidi.
The thesis aimed to:
Evaluation of responses of skirted foundations
Analyze the enhancement in the ability to carry load and the decrease in the settling of the foundation, lateral horizontal displacement, tilting resulting from the implementation of a skirt under an centric-vertical and eccentric-inclined load.
Evaluate the impact of length and angle of skirt and utilzying geogrid under skirted foundation.
Investigate the impact of varying load angle inclination and eccentricity on the foundation and skirt.
The thesis also included:
Study of skirt foundations under vertical, negative and positive loads inclined to the center at different loading angles and eccentricities. Moreover, the effect of several factors such as (skirt angle, skirt length), number of skirts, and use of geogrid beneath skirt foundations.
Accordingly, the thesis came out with a set of recommendations, including:
- Study the behavior of skirted footing under dynamic loads.
- Study the behavior of skirted footing for various relative densities.
- Study the performance of skirted footing placed on soft clay with the addition of cement to the confined soil.
After the scientific discussion by the members of the discussion committee and listening to the researcher’s defense and evaluating the thesis, the researcher was awarded a Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
