The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad witnessed the public discussion of the PhD student (Ahlam Ali Abbood) from the Department of Civil Engineering for her thesis entitled (Performance of Composite Concrete Columns Reinforced with Cementitiously Grouted Steel Tubes (on Tuesday 29/10/2024, in Prof. Dr. Khaled Shaker Hall, under the supervision of Prof. Dr.  Nazar K. Oukaili.

The thesis aimed to evaluate the experimental and numerical effectiveness of a new concrete-encased column using small circular steel tubes filled with cementitious grouting material as the primary reinforcement instead of traditional steel bars. The thesis also included a study of the effect of type of column, type of reinforcement, type of applied load, and spiral pitch on the failure load of columns. Accordingly, the thesis included some main recommendations:

  1. 1. Using steel tubes with an area equivalent to that of steel bars instead of conventional columns increased the bearing capacity of reinforced concrete columns.
  2. 2. Steel tubes whose area matched 30% of the steel bar area achieved a bearing capacity of about 81% of the conventional concrete columns under concentric load.
  3. 3. Decrease in the ultimate failure load with increasing slenderness ratio, eccentricity of the applied load, and spiral pitch.

After the scientific discussion by the members of the discussion committee and listening to the researcher’s defense, the researcher obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Structural Engineering.
