The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad witnessed the public discussion of the master’s student (Mustafa Abdullah Ghulam) from the Civil Engineering Department on his thesis entitled “Performance of cold-formed double-channel lintels” on Thursday, 11/9/2023, in Dr. Khaled Shaker Hall.
Under the supervision of (Prof. Dr. Ahmed Jabbar Hussein Al-Shammari), the structural behavior of using cold-formed cast iron beams with double channels was studied, in terms of bending strength, shear strength, buckling strength, and lateral torsional strength. The overall sill depth has been increased by 50 %, with polished sills resulting in the modified section properties being more efficient in design and application development. Eight specimens with different dimensions for the lower and upper flanges were designed and examined under concentrated loads at two points on the middle part of the beam. The final condition, service condition, load deflection, failure mode, and steel load stress are observed. Furthermore, the experimental tests included testing the materials to estimate their physical and mechanical properties.
Experimental results showed that switching the edge width between the upper and lower edges has a very small effect on the stiffness and ultimate load of the polished beams. Numerical analysis of cold-formed steel beams through final state, yield state, service condition, load deflection and failure mode is presented and compared with experimental results. I found the comparison generally acceptable.
After scientific discussion by the respected members of the discussion committees and listening to the researcher’s defense, he obtained a master’s degree in civil engineering.
