Assistant Professor Dr. Dhirgham Alobaydi, a faculty member in the Department of Architecture at the University of Baghdad, participated in the defense committee of the doctoral dissertation entitled “Sustainable Tourism in Urban Heritage Sites”, submitted by the PhD candidate Ghassan Hassan Hammoud. The defense took place at the Department of Architecture, University of Technology, on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
The dissertation addressed the topic of sustainable tourism in urban heritage sites, focusing on achieving a balance between tourism development and the preservation of the cultural, social, and environmental values of these sites. The study aimed to establish a theoretical and practical framework that contributes to the sustainability of these heritage sites through an analysis of both local and international experiences and by proposing effective management mechanisms.
The study concluded with an emphasis on the necessity of adopting comprehensive strategies based on the development of relevant legislation, raising community awareness, and effectively involving local communities in the processes of protection and development. It also highlighted the importance of employing modern technologies in the conservation and management of heritage sites, in addition to promoting responsible tourism practices and improving infrastructure to ensure the preservation of heritage resources and the achievement of sustainable local economic development.
