The College of Engineering at Baghdad University hosted the public defense of Master’s student Sidad Saib Ibrahim from the Department of Architecture Engineering, presenting her thesis titled “Art in the Urban Landscape: An Exploratory Study of the Impact of the Artistic Dimension in Achieving the Identity of the Urban Landscape.” The defense took place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in the Mohamed Makiya Hall, under the supervision of Dr. Ammar Saleh Ashour.
The thesis aimed to study and clarify the basic concepts related to the research, along with secondary concepts derived from the study and analysis of previous literature. It also explored the impact of the artistic dimension on the identity of the urban landscape, specifically in the case study of Baghdad City.
Additionally, the thesis included a study of various global experiments, analyzing the role of art in shaping the identity of the urban landscape in different cities.
The thesis concluded with several recommendations, including:
- The need for comprehensive and multi-disciplinary research addressing the relationship between types of art, the artistic dimension, and urban landscape identity in different contexts. This research would help develop appropriate artistic strategies for Arab cities, especially Baghdad. It also emphasized the development of local academic studies focusing on art and its role in shaping the identity of Arab cities, particularly Baghdad.
- Integrating different art forms into architectural design and fostering collaboration between artists, architects, and urban planners.
- Organizing workshops and training courses on the importance of coordinating advertising art with the urban landscape. This would involve collaboration between architects and artists to improve urban design and have a more positive impact on the identity of Baghdad’s urban landscape.
- Developing unified design standards and adopting a strategy for coordinating advertising art in order to integrate it into the urban landscape design of both Al-Kindi Street and Al-Rubaei Street, ensuring a seamless integration with the architectural and urban design character of these areas.
After a scientific discussion by the members of the defense committee and hearing the researcher’s defense, the committee awarded the researcher a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering.
