Under the auspices of the College of Engineering Dean’s Office and the supervision of the Department of Architectural Engineering, a field visit to the historic Al-Mustansiriya School was organized on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The visit was attended by third-year students as part of their Architectural Design course, supervised by the following professors:
Prof. Dr. Huda Abdul-Sahib Al-Awwan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osama Abdul-Monem, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fawzia Arheem, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sally Fakhry, and M. Amal Fadhil, alongside the faculty members of the third-year class.

The goal of the visit was to enhance students’ understanding of spatial organization patterns and movement in historical buildings, as well as to examine the preservation and rehabilitation methods the building has undergone, with a focus on the role of architectural design in these processes. This contributed to raising the students’ cultural and architectural awareness.

During the visit, the students were accompanied by Mr. Mahdi Ali, the director of the Al-Mustansiriya School, who provided a detailed explanation of the building’s history and the restoration techniques it has experienced. This enriched the field experience and enhanced the academic benefit for the students.

This visit is part of a scientific collaboration between PhD student M. Amal Fadhil and the professors of the Architectural Design course. The collaboration aims to implement a scientific experience that enhances learning through spatial exploration and supports the third-year program with educational tools based on the exploration of culturally and historically significant sites. This experience is part of a series of planned field activities for students, which will be gradually implemented according to the academic stage and curriculum.
