On Sunday, March 17th, a collaborative workshop titled “Seismic Structural Design for Architects” was organized by the Continuing Education Unit. The workshop aimed to enhance the understanding of architectural designers regarding the specific requirements of building structures in seismic activity zones.
Dr. Haider Al-Baghdadi provided a comprehensive overview of earthquakes, including their nature, occurrence, types, and measurement methods. He also discussed architectural design specifications and their relationship to structural design, emphasizing the importance of integrating building structures effectively.
A highlight of the workshop was the seismic examination of a concrete column model conducted in the materials laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering. This practical session allowed participants to observe and analyze the behavior of structural elements under seismic forces, enhancing their understanding of seismic design principles.
The workshop concluded with an open discussion between organizers and students from the Architecture and Civil Engineering departments. This exchange of ideas provided valuable insights and fostered collaboration between disciplines, further enriching participants’ knowledge and skills in seismic structural design.”
