The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Baghdad conducted the public defense of Ali AbdulJabbar Salih Alfahad’s doctoral thesis entitled

Integrating Value Management and Risk Management Using Building Information Modeling for Improving the Construction in Iraq

The defense conducted on Monday, 22 of January, 2024, in the Hall of Dr. Khaled Shaker in the civil engineering department.

The examination committee consisted of:

  1. 1. Prof. Dr. Sawsan Rasheed Mohammed – College of Engineering/University of Baghdad (Chairman)
  2. 2. Prof. Dr. Hatem Khaleefah Breesam – College of Engineering/University of Baghdad (Member)
  3. 3. Prof. Dr. Kadhim Raheim Erzaij – College of Engineering/University of Baghdad (Member)
  4. 4. Assist. Prof. Dr. Jumaa Awad Alsomaydaii – College of Engineering/University of Anbar (Member)
  5. 5. Assist. Prof. Dr. Omar Akrm A. Al-juboori – College of Science/University of Baghdad (Member)
  6. Assist. Prof. Dr. Raafat Mahmoud Abbas – College of Engineering/University of Baghdad (Supervisor)

The research aims to develop two programs that work integratively with building information modeling. The first program was named “BIM Supporting System”, which manages the risks affecting construction projects in Iraq while employing the principles of value management in choosing the best response to those risks, as this program supports BIM technology with information on risk management. The second program was called “BIM Based System”, which relies on BIM in its information and compares alternatives at the design level with the aim of improving the design of buildings based on value management principles, taking into account risk exposure and the output of the first system as a criterion for evaluation, in addition to choosing the criteria of cost, time, appearance, material availability, thermal insulation and environmental impact as criteria for evaluating alternatives.

The developed systems were validated by applying to a field case study that included the preparation of integrated designs for the Anbar Oncology Center project using BIM technology and the application of the programs developed in this thesis. The validity of these programs was also validated by presenting to experts from a number of Iraqi government institutions and international organizations operating in Iraq related to the construction sector, companies and consulting offices.

Accordingly, the research came out with a set of recommendations, including:

  1. Adopting the “BIM Supporting System” program to manage risks affecting construction projects in Iraq.
  2. Adopting the “BIM Based System” program to choose the best alternatives in order to improve the designs.
  3. Creating divisions and departments within the WBS of institutions that adopt the procedures and programs developed in the thesis.
  4. Enacting laws that encourage governmental and non-governmental institutions operating in Iraq to adopt building information modeling.

After the scientific discussion by the examination committee, the researcher obtained a doctorate degree in Civil Engineering / Project Management with a grade of (Excellence).
