A thesis discussion was held on Tuesday 9-5-2023 in Prof. Dr. Najeeb Kharufa Hall. This thesis was presented by student (Saif Ali Abdul Reda) and titled as:
“Quantifying and Quality Assessing of Surface water for Shuwaija Marshes in Wasit Governorate”
After discussing the student, listening to his defense, and evaluating the level of the thesis, the student was granted a master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering – Water Resources. With Excellent Degree
The discussion committee was consisted by the following:
Prof. Dr. Hayder Abudl Ameer Khudheir —————— Chairman
Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Khaleq Kamal Mahmmoud —- Membership
Lec. Dr. Mohammed Rashid Dhaher ——————– Membership
Prof. Dr. Basim Sh. Abed. ———————————–Supervisor
The thesis summarized by following: –
Water resources are most exposed globally to climate change impact due to the associated increase in the temperature degrees and variability in precipitation rates, therefore, it has become necessary to conduct hydrological studies and the use of modern technologies for storing and using water. Al-Shuwaija Marshes lacks planning and study in terms of managing the use of water revenues in the flood, receding and drought seasons, as the water is currently discharged to the Tigris River.
The hydrological model was created for the watersheds of Al-Shuwaija Marshes, Sixty simulations were conducted to model Al-Shuwaija Marshes for different return periods and rainstorms.
In addition to conducting a qualitative assessment of surface water by selecting eleven sites to collect samples from the above-mentioned sites within the Shuwaija marsh and then testing them in the laboratory during the dry season and the rainy season periodically.
The main objectives for this thesis are:
- Estimate of peak discharge of the marsh, using storm analysis for 6 return periods up to 100 years.
- Evaluate of water quality of the marsh and statement the impact of discharging wastewater from the sewage treatment plant water of Kut City into the marsh.
- Identify effective strategies for managing and using marsh water for different stages (flood, receding and drought)
Recommendations:
- Taking the Shuwaija marsh as a natural reservoir, with a storage capacity of one billion cubic meters.
- Propose three water storage sites on three different rain levels.
