The public defense of the doctoral student Tabark Abd Hussein<\/strong> from the Department of Mechanical Engineering \u2013 College of Engineering \/ University of Baghdad was held for her dissertation entitled:
\n“Tubular Solar Still with Various Inserted Materials”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The defense took place in Dr. Ihsan Yahya Hall<\/strong> on Sunday, September 14, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The examination committee consisted of:<\/p>\n

  4. Asst. Prof. Dr. Essam Hassan Attia<\/strong> \u2013 Member<\/li>\n
  5. Asst. Prof. Dr. Wael Sami Wadie<\/strong> \u2013 Member<\/li>\n
  6. Prof. Dr. Karima Ismail Amori<\/strong> \u2013 Supervisor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This dissertation focused on the development of a tubular solar still that uses solar energy to evaporate and purify saline water. The design features an innovative hexagonal glass cover<\/strong>, integrated with a heat pipe<\/strong> and a dual parabolic concentrator<\/strong> to enhance thermal efficiency. The system\u2019s performance was evaluated using various absorbing materials (hydrogel, copper mesh, and charcoal) with different tilt angles and quantities.<\/p>\n

    The results demonstrated a significant improvement in freshwater productivity, with a maximum increase of 264.38%<\/strong> achieved using 6000 hydrogel beads<\/strong> at a 15\u00b0 tilt angle<\/strong>. The system also achieved a competitive production cost of $0.052\/L<\/strong>, along with notable environmental benefits<\/strong>, including the mitigation of 15.8 tons of CO\u2082 emissions annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Key Recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Adoption of the hexagonal glass cover design<\/strong> for its positive impact on thermal efficiency.<\/li>\n
    2. Use of hydrogel<\/strong> as one of the most effective absorbing materials to improve system productivity.<\/li>\n
    3. Preference for a 15\u00b0 tilt angle<\/strong> with optimized absorber quantities for ideal performance.<\/li>\n
    4. Potential application of the developed system in remote areas suffering from water scarcity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    5. Expansion of the proposed model to include other types of distillation systems or related thermal applications.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      After the scientific discussion by the esteemed members of the examination committee, the researcher Tabark Abd Hussein<\/strong> was awarded the Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Thermo-Fluids) with a grade of Excellent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
