The dissertation is titled:<br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Rejuvenating the Traditional Residential Fabric in Historic City Centers&#8221;<\/strong>, and was supervised by <strong>Prof. Dr. Ghada Mousa Razouqi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dissertation Overview:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The research investigates the potential of <strong>rejuvenation strategies<\/strong> to revitalize and reactivate the traditional urban fabric\u2014especially where residential use remains active. The study identifies a core research problem:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cA lack of sufficient knowledge regarding the potential and mechanisms of rejuvenation strategies in reviving deteriorating urban fabrics, particularly traditional residential areas in historic city centers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research Objectives:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>To provide insight into the potentials of <strong>rejuvenation<\/strong> as a strategy to inject new life and energy into the traditional urban fabric.<\/li>\n<li>To present practical mechanisms that can implement rejuvenation and halt urban deterioration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Methodology:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The dissertation adopts a <strong>comparative analytical approach<\/strong>, drawing parallels between <strong>medicine<\/strong> and <strong>architecture\/urban design<\/strong> to explore rejuvenation concepts. The core hypothesis posits that <strong>rejuvenation strategies<\/strong>, when analogized with medical rejuvenation processes, can effectively stop deterioration and revive the life of traditional residential fabrics.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Innovations and Framework:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The study develops an <strong>analogous model<\/strong> by adapting medical rejuvenation techniques:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Acupuncture<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stem Cell Transplantation<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Psychotherapy (including space activation and the addition of functional uses)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These were translated into urban strategies using indicators recognized in urban studies. A <strong>matrix-based model<\/strong> was constructed using components of the traditional urban fabric, offering a programmable system for rejuvenating deteriorated areas.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Application and Case Study:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The model was applied to a section of <strong>Historic Rusafa<\/strong> in Baghdad, specifically:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Al-Bab Al-Wastani landmark<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>historic axis<\/strong> connecting it to the river<\/li>\n<li>Surrounding neighborhoods: <strong>Abu Dudu, Faraj Allah, and Tatran<\/strong> (modern districts 123, 125, 127, 129)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Using the <strong>Traffic Lights Theory Diagnosis<\/strong>, the model assessed levels of deterioration and implemented interventions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Repopulating vacant buildings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Programming rejuvenation<\/strong> interventions for surrounding areas<\/li>\n<li><strong>Acupuncture-based stimulation<\/strong> of Al-Bab Al-Wastani and its surroundings<\/li>\n<li>Introducing <strong>green areas, infrastructure services, and socially activating functions<\/strong> to meet residents\u2019 needs, enhance place attachment, and encourage return migration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Dissertation Committee:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Prof. Dr. Inaam Mohammed Amin<\/strong> \u2013 Chair (University of Baghdad, Urban Design)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Asst.
