{"id":7626,"date":"2025-03-26T10:01:43","date_gmt":"2025-03-26T07:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=7626"},"modified":"2025-03-26T10:01:43","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T07:01:43","slug":"masters-thesis-defense-on-natural-coagulants-for-water-treatment-at-the-university-of-baghdad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=7626","title":{"rendered":"Master\u2019s Thesis Defense on Natural Coagulants for Water Treatment at the University of Baghdad"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Faculty of Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering<\/strong> at the <strong>University of Baghdad<\/strong> hosted a public defense for <strong>Master\u2019s student Mohammed Abdul Hadi Mustafa<\/strong> in <strong>Sanitary Engineering<\/strong> for his thesis titled:<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cOptimal Performance and Processing Efficiency of Pomegranate Seed and Peel Powders as Natural Coagulant-Flocculants for Raw Water Treatment: Comparison and Combination with Alum.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The defense took place on <strong>March 3, 2025<\/strong>, in <strong>Prof. Dr. Khaled Shaker Hall<\/strong>, in the presence of faculty members from the department.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The study explored the potential use of <strong>pomegranate seeds and peels<\/strong> as <strong>natural coagulants<\/strong> in water treatment. The bioactive substances of each type were extracted using <strong>four different methods (water, salt, acid, and base extraction)<\/strong>. These natural coagulants were tested both <strong>independently<\/strong> and in <strong>combination with alum<\/strong> as a coagulant aid.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Objectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The research aimed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Develop sustainable and natural alternatives<\/strong> to chemical coagulants, which can have adverse effects on <strong>human health and the environment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluate the effectiveness<\/strong> of pomegranate-derived coagulants in removing contaminants such as <strong>turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), color, and chemical oxygen demand (COD)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reduce reliance on chemical coagulants<\/strong> by incorporating natural materials, which are cost-effective and environmentally friendly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>high fiber, sugar, and protein content<\/strong> of pomegranate-based coagulants enhanced their coagulation efficiency.<\/li>\n<li>The results demonstrated <strong>high removal efficiency<\/strong> of contaminants from raw water, supporting the <strong>feasibility of natural coagulants<\/strong> as substitutes or coagulant aids.<\/li>\n<li>When used in combination with <strong>alum<\/strong>, the natural coagulants exhibited improved performance in <strong>water purification<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Recommendations for Future Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Examine additional influencing factors<\/strong>, such as <strong>mixing speed, settling time, and temperature<\/strong>, to optimize removal efficiency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Investigate the potential of pomegranate seed and peel powders<\/strong> as <strong>adsorbents<\/strong> or convert them into <strong>activated carbon<\/strong> for water treatment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conduct an economic feasibility study<\/strong> on the large-scale application of <strong>pomegranate-based coagulants<\/strong> in water treatment plants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong>Defense Outcome<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>discussion committee<\/strong>, chaired by <strong>Prof. Dr. Mohammed Sadeq Salman<\/strong>, with members <strong>Prof. Dr. Suad Mahdi Al-Fatlawi<\/strong>, <strong>Prof. Dr. Ghayda Yaseen Rasheed<\/strong>, and supervisor <strong>Asst.
