Prof. Dr. Salah R. Al Zaidee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Research Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The study focused on an <strong>experimental and numerical investigation<\/strong> of the effects of <strong>circular transverse openings<\/strong> on the behavior of <strong>simply supported concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) beams<\/strong>. Three openings, each with a <strong>diameter equal to 40% of the beam depth<\/strong>, were analyzed. A <strong>parametric study<\/strong> was later conducted using <strong>Abaqus<\/strong> to explore the impact of <strong>opening size and location<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Concrete infill significantly enhances structural performance<\/strong>, increasing:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Load-carrying capacity<\/strong> by up to <strong>224.5%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ductility<\/strong> by <strong>187.1%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy absorption<\/strong> by <strong>1300%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transverse openings reduce structural strength<\/strong>, with CFST beams experiencing:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Up to 18.6% reduction in load-carrying capacity<\/strong> (compared to only <strong>3.77% in hollow steel tube (HST) beams<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Up to 20% decrease in ductility<\/strong> (compared to <strong>2.54% in HST beams<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Up to 30.7% reduction in energy absorption<\/strong> (compared to <strong>14.1% in HST beams<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parametric Study Insights:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Larger diameter-to-depth (D\/d) ratios<\/strong> significantly reduce CFST beam strength.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spacing-to-depth (S\/d) ratios<\/strong> show that while CFST beams initially gain strength with increased spacing, excessive spacing leads to a decline. <strong>HST beams, however, exhibit notable reductions beyond specific thresholds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Recommendations for Future Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The study proposes further investigations into:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alternative opening shapes<\/strong> (e.g., elliptical, rectangular) and their effects on structural performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Opening location variations<\/strong> and their influence on beam behavior.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dynamic loading conditions<\/strong> (e.g., seismic, impact loads) on CFST beams with openings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Additional reinforcement strategies<\/strong>, such as stiffeners or enhanced concrete infill, to mitigate strength loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Thesis Outcome<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After the <strong>scientific discussion and evaluation<\/strong> by the esteemed members of the <strong>defense committee<\/strong>, <strong>Ali Mohammed Abdulridha<\/strong> was awarded a <strong>Master\u2019s degree in Civil Engineering \/ Structural Engineering<\/strong>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;7616&#8243; img_size=&#8221;large&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad hosted the public defense of Master\u2019s student Ali Mohammed Abdulridha &#8230; <a class=\"cz_readmore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=7614\"><i class=\"fa fa-angle-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><span>\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0632\u064a\u062f<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":165,"featured_media":7615,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[35,31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7614","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-civil-engineering","category-thesis"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.8 -
