The session was presented by Dr. Nabil Hassan. The aim of this discussion session was to review the importance of damage detection and health monitoring of composite materials in various engineering fields, such as mechanical, architectural, civil, and aeronautical engineering. Composite materials possess excellent mechanical properties; however, due to their non-homogeneous nature, they can experience complex nonlinear damage conditions. These damages include impacts, delamination, matrix cracking, fiber fracture, and voids. Therefore, early detection of damages in composite structures is crucial to avoid catastrophic accidents and their tragic consequences, such as aircraft accidents. To achieve this, there is a need to develop robust algorithms for Structural Health Monitoring SHM. In this discussion session, various non-destructive damage testing techniques were reviewed, followed by a discussion of vibration-based damage detection methods, including the positive and negative aspects of each. The session concluded with a comprehensive discussion on the technique of vibro-acoustic modulation as one of the nonlinear hybrid techniques used in advanced signal processing for damage detection in composite structures.
