{"id":12345,"date":"2026-10-06T11:29:20","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T08:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=12345"},"modified":"2026-10-06T11:29:20","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T08:29:20","slug":"university-of-baghdads-college-of-engineering-discusses-masters-thesis-on-evaluating-hot-mix-asphalt-properties-using-styrene-butadiene-styrene-and-polyethylene-glyco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.coeng.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=12345","title":{"rendered":"University of Baghdad\u2019s College of Engineering Discusses Master\u2019s Thesis on Evaluating Hot Mix Asphalt Properties Using Styrene\u2013Butadiene\u2013Styrene and Polyethylene Glycol Modified Asphalt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<p>The College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad held the public defense of the Master\u2019s thesis submitted by researcher <strong>Sundus Iyad Imad<\/strong> from the Department of Civil Engineering, entitled <strong>\u201cEvaluation of Hot Mix Asphalt Properties Using Asphalt Modified with Styrene\u2013Butadiene\u2013Styrene and Polyethylene Glycol.\u201d<\/strong> The defense was held on <strong>Thursday, August 27, 2026<\/strong>, at the <strong>Dr. Khalid Shakir Hall<\/strong>, under the supervision of <strong>Assist. Prof. Ruaa Hamid Latif<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The study investigated the modification of <strong>40\/50 penetration-grade asphalt binder<\/strong> using <strong>Styrene\u2013Butadiene\u2013Styrene (SBS)<\/strong> and <strong>Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)<\/strong> polymers. SBS was added at concentrations of <strong>2%, 3%, and 4% by weight of the binder<\/strong>, while PEG was added at concentrations of <strong>1.5%, 2.5%, and 3.5%<\/strong>. Three hybrid mixtures were also prepared by combining the corresponding proportions: <strong>Mix1<\/strong>, consisting of 2% SBS and 1.5% PEG; <strong>Mix2<\/strong>, consisting of 3% SBS and 2.5% PEG; and <strong>Mix3<\/strong>, consisting of 4% SBS and 3.5% PEG, using a <strong>high-shear wet mixing process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The experimental program included two interconnected levels of evaluation. The binder characterization involved <strong>penetration, softening point, ductility, rotational viscosity, storage stability, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)<\/strong> tests. Meanwhile, the performance of the asphalt mixtures was evaluated through <strong>Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, Cantabro abrasion, and rutting tests using the wheel-tracking method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The results demonstrated significant improvements in the physical and rheological properties of the modified asphalt binder. The hybrid <strong>Mix3<\/strong> achieved the best binder-level performance, recording the lowest penetration value of <strong>29 tenths of a millimeter<\/strong> and the highest softening point of <strong>60.2\u00b0C<\/strong>. FTIR analysis confirmed that the modification mechanism was predominantly <strong>physical<\/strong>, while SEM images revealed improved homogeneity in the microstructure of the hybrid system.<\/p>\n<p>At the asphalt mixture level, the combined SBS\u2013PEG modification resulted in a clear improvement in mechanical performance. <strong>Mix3<\/strong> increased Marshall stability from <strong>9.3 to 15.6 kN<\/strong>, raised the indirect tensile strength ratio from <strong>82.6% to 92.6%<\/strong>, reduced dry abrasion loss in the Cantabro test from <strong>7.75% to 5.99%<\/strong>, and decreased rut depth from <strong>4.49 to 1.44 mm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the mixture modified with <strong>4% SBS alone<\/strong> demonstrated slightly higher rutting resistance, the <strong>Mix3 hybrid system<\/strong> achieved the best overall balance across the various performance indicators.
